Love! Valour! Compassion! | Set Designer

Westchester Playhouse, Los Angeles

The Westchester Playhouse in Los Angeles produced a revival of Terrence McNally’s Love! Valour! Compassion! in spring of 2025. I am grateful to have been chosen as the Set Designer on this production to bring McNally’s vision to life. I stayed true to McNally’s stage and set directions with a simple stage inclusive of scenic accents that don’t take away from the dialogue of the play. The set consisted of simple platforms and chairs that were versatile for both in-house scenes as well as outdoor scenes on the lake. Additionally, downstage left and downstage right gave way to more stationery set pieces (e.g. kitchen and outdoor lawn), where heightened parts of the production take place.

Hardwood Floor Painting

This video captures the beginning portion of the the hardwood floor painting. The process consisted of a mustard yellow base coat, followed by mapping out the hardwood floor divots with a solid dark brown - creating an illusion of space between floorboards. Lastly, I coated the whole floor with a watered down lighter brown while leveraging a patterned paint stencil over the semi-dry paint to create the illusion of wood grain.

Old House Balusters

I sourced four matching balusters from the Westchester Playhouse, painting them a base coat of white and layering brown over top to create the look of an old 1915 baluster railing.

Kitchen cabinets

With fresh wood from Home Depot, I needed to create the illusion of original cabinetry from a 1915s Dutch County house. So, after the build, I worked on staining the cabinets a Colonial Maple tint.

Final Kitchen Details

Once the kitchen cabinets and Frigedaire refrigerator were installed, I worked on the final details old cottage set decorations including curtains.
